You can still do it but most of the websites are a bit confusing and you normally have to rename the file extension to .flv.

I know that YouTube are not overly happy about people doing it though and for that reason I am resitant to give a description on how it is done.

I have never been a great fan of real player. I really get put off by an application that uses your desktop as an advertising bill board.

Does it really do what they are suggesting or is this just advertising speak. I would be really surprised if it allows you to download and store YouTube videos.

If I can bring myself to install it I will give it a try.

RealPlayer interfaces with Flash and if Flash can play it then RealPlayer can download it.  If all you use RealPlayer for is to download videos, then you do not have to put up with the ads.  Also, the "free" RealPlayer can burn VCDs.

I have tried it and it does. I think it also lets you download embedded audio in some cases. For YouTube videos all I did was install RealPlayer, open the YouTube page in IE, hover over the video then a link pops up above it.
