I decide to upgrade my Vista desktop to SM 3.3.  Now that I have installed it it will not run.  When I try to launch the program the following message comes up:

"Screen Monkey has stopped working

A problem caused the program to stop working correctly.  Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available."

I have to choose to close the program.  I can install v.3.2 and it works fine.  I have even tried beta versions of 3.4 and they do not work.  I have seen in other conversations that there is a new component that installs with SM.  Maybe that did not install correctly?  Could this be the problem?  How do I get a completely fresh install so that this problem goes away?

If this happens you would normally expect to see something in the Windows event log which indicates what is happening.

To fully remove Screen Monkey:

  • Uninstall Screen Monkey using Add Remove Programs
  • Check that the Screen Monkey folder under Program Files is empty.
  • If you have any plugins installed, remove these too
  • Any remaining files in the Screen Monkey, Program Files directory can be deleted.
  • Under the application data folder there should be a Screen Monkey folder. You may need to show hidden files to see it. It is in a different place for each operatting system but under Vista should be in Users\{UserName}\AppData\Roaming.
  • It is safe to delete all the contents on the Screen Monkey directory under AppData but you will loose all your settings.
  • Now you have completely removed any trace from your system. Re-install Screen Monkey.

Any news on this? I am assuming it is now fixed.

Actually this is not fixed.  Sorry.  It took me a few days to get the time to try what you posted.  I walked through the above procedure with no change.  I actually deleted the Screen Monkey folder in the AppData\Roaming directory.  I even went back and did a repair on .NET Framework 3.5 just to make sure that was not the problem.  Still getting the same message and no Screen Monkey.

I cannot explain it but Screen Monkey 3.4 beta 7 is working.  I ran a program (CCleaner) and used its uninstall function.  Interestingly enough, CCleaner removed Screen Monkey from the list of installed programs but did not remove the Screen Monkey directory or any of its contents from the Program Files directory.  I then deleted all of the contents of the Screen Monkey directory in AppData\Roaming but left the Screen Monkey folder in its location.  When I click on ScreenMonkey.exe the programs seems to run just fine.  If I reinstall Screen Monkey so that it is included among the populated list in "Programs and Features," Screen Monkey stops working.  For right now it is working but I have no idea why.  I may also have difficulty upgrading in the future.  Perhaps this is a problem specific to my machine, but I brought my situation to the forum to get help and also express this issue, just in case someone else encounters this issue.
